Traveling up north on the train today, I started reading Matt Taibbi’s Griftopia. It quite affected my perception of the new housing development north of Maitland.
It was encroaching on old dairy farms, and I had this immediate impression of the estate as a new type of farm, where the farmers are in the mortgage business. The grass comes in little boxes and is consumed by two-legged bovines.
Anyway, on other topics, the trip was fine and I set up the bike in muggy conditions at the station. According to the motel staff, it’s been dry and muggy for several days now. If I get away and to the destination early each day, I’ll hopefully miss the worst of it.
The new rear panniers are not as convenient as the old ones. Without those inbuilt extra strapping options, I’m forced to tie long unwieldy objects to the front panniers which I then hit with my knees and which restrict my turning circle. Oh well, I’ll play with my options tonight and see if I can improve the situation.
