I’ve just added some extra “functionality” to show map links on any reference in the blog to a location that can be placed on a map. They should be visible as a globe beside a place name like this: Mullumbimby.
Obviously issues will arise where the place name is ambiguous, and I may get pissed off with the feature and remove it in a while. In the meantime, enjoy lookup maps.
By the way, the functionality is provided by MapMyPage.
I’m not seeing a globe, or indeed a link of any kind there…
It only appears on the main page, by the look of it, and I had to unblock javascript calls to mymappage.com in my browser for it to work, but the globes should be there – a llittle icon to the right of place-names
Well I can see the links to the North Pole and the US on the next page (North Pole doesn’t work so well), but not on this page. So it doesn’t seem, for me, to be a main page, or javascript, issue.
I don’t know where the North Pole is supposed to map to.
From the map page: “MapMyPage is compatible with Internet Explorer 6 and 7, Firefox 2 and 3, Safari 3, and Google Chrome”.
I followed the instructions on their site for adding the single JS call to the site header, but maybe there’s some strange interoperability issue with something else I’ve got running.
The NP maps to some where north of the Earth projection, which I suppose is sort of correct, but looking at a rectangular map like Google’s, you’d end up with a NOrth Line, rather than a North Pole.
The only link that I can’t see is the Mullumbimby one.
I have the latest version of Firefox running.
well, MapMySite does say that it’s beta software 🙂 I guess we’re guinea pigs and proof that beta software is more often crap, than useful.
Thanks for taking MapMyPage for a spin.
Viewing the North Pole (90,0) in Google Maps just displays a grey background (and a great photo of the North Pole sign from Panaramio).
I ran initial tests of MapMyPage in WordPress and had positive results. Let me know if you ran into a conflict and I’ll do my best to help.
Brandon – thanks for commenting, and thanks for the work in developing the software. I work for a company the develops mapping software and am always interested in new mapping tools etc.
I notice that there was a brief hiccup a few days ago, where the links didn’t appear correctly, but all seems to work again now.
