Here’s a graphic report from an ABC reporter in Jerusalem about what happened when she went to cover a protest by orthodox jews about a car park that’s open on the sabbath. It’s not that people were driving on the sabbath, but that having the carpark open made it easier for them to do so. never mind that a large increase in tourists means that there has to be an increase in places for them to park.
When the reporter turned down the wrong street and ended up in the middle of the protest
Suddenly the crowd turned on me, screaming in my face. Dozens of angry men began spitting on me. I found myself herded against a brick wall as they kept on spitting – on my face, my hair, my clothes, my arms. It was like rain, coming at me from all directions – hitting my recorder, my bag, my shoes, even my glasses.
It’s not the Palestinians that need walling up – it’s the orthodox jews (and other religious extremists). Herd them all off somewhere and disallow all contact – trade, travel etc. They can then live on their own according to their fundamentalist precepts and not have to be “tainted” by the “impurities” of the rest of us. Then, once a year we can have some sort of documentary of the state of their society as a warning to the rest of us, in case we forget what an evil bunch they are.
They should love the idea, anyway. They can use it as an attempt to prove to us how well their world would work when everyone (in their closed-off universe) is an orthodox jew. Good luck with that 🙂
