The state of media in the US

A nice piece by Sheila Sample about the lack or integrity from Fox News and CNN et al. It’s depressing to read quotes lke this from CBS’ Dan Rather.

Bush is my president. Whatever he tells me to do, I’ll just salute, line up behind him and say ‘Yes Sir!

That’s a man who is not interested in the truth, only in propaganda.

The right claims that Michael Moore is unbalanced, but he’s only making up for the disinformation that is almost the sole voice in the American media. A nice review of Farenheit 9/11 in the Sydney Morning Herald says that”The public no longer sees journalists as independent of the powerful, if they ever did” which is spot on.

Sheila’s peice ends up with a cute summary of the attitude of the various media players:

PBS–I wouldn’t sell my integrity for all the money in the world. Not for a hundred million, billion, trillion dollars!

FOX–Then you’re crazy!

CNN–I know you are but what am I?

ABC–You’re a spineless Fox wannabe!

CBS–I know you are but what am I?

NBC–You’re an idiot!

PRINT MEDIA–I know you are but what am I?

RUSH LIMBAUGH, SEAN HANNITY, ANN COULTER– I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I?

WE THE PEOPLE–What about the lies Bush told us? Why are more than 900 of our young people dead; tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis and Afghanistanis dead? When will you stop the madness? Who is responsible for this obscenity? Where is the outrage? How could you allow this to happen?
