the level of implicit racism in the USA
Seriously, this is some fucked up shit – old people in nursing homes who would rather not get treatment than let a black nurse touch them. What’s worse, IMO though, is the state pandering to that attitude. I though that the anti-discrimination legislation that prevented shops from not serving blacks would also come into play in these cases. Still, I… Read more →
Watch out for fumes given off by stupidity
An airport shut down in California, and TSA staff sent to hospital for exposure to fumes – from honey! It’s almost as bad as being suspended from school for bringing in “an unregulated over-the-counter drug” to share with your friends.
I only read it for the articles
One of the security blogs I follow came up with a link to an interesting article in Playboy. Apparently the whole scare-storm about Al-Jazeera was caused by some guy who conned the Pentagon into buying software that didn’t exist to decode terrorist signals which didn’t exist. This was all kept hidden away within the CIA’s Directorate of Science and Technology… Read more →
The blatant conflict of interest of Glenn Beck
I’ve been catching up on old C&L links to Jon Stewart, and came across one that makes me really upset at the abuse of trust practised by some in the media (and thankfully Stewart is one of those to expose them). Glenn Beck is a paid spokesman for an internet gold site, and also talks up gold on his program… Read more →
Religion is a crutch
This is an interesting article about some research pointing to religion being a mechanism for coping with high levels of stress. The argument is that religion is not a deep-seated or inherited tendency. It is a crutch to which people turn when they are under extreme stress, “a natural invention of human minds in response to a defective habitat”. Americans,… Read more →
The science is real
The outrage is manufactured. PZ Meyers has pointed to a quite articulate response to the outrage over the leaked emails. There’s no outrage like republican outrage, and Rush Limbaugh is particularly repulsive. Still, if you can control your gag reflex, I highly recommend watching this.
Christian Zionist Snake-Oil
An American named John Brown is reportedly digging for oil in Israel using the Bible as a reference; his goal is to “ensure energy independence for the state of Israel” and has purportedly spent 26 years trying to find out where God hid the oil. A pity he can’t just rung him up and ask 🙂 “I’m already writing the… Read more →
All Hail Miyazaki!
…and all hail the Ponyo theme song 🙂 As I walked out of the cinema, people were still singing away. Yeah, I know; you’ll listen and say we are all tragics. Still, we enjoyed ourselves so you can all go and be grumps elsewhere. Ponyo is a real kids movie, but it’s beautiful and has a heart-warming theme. The audience… Read more →
How to make a h-bomb
It doesn’t take much more than a bicycle pump, a bucket, a cooker range hood. Oh, and some uranium. Here’s how. As the instructions say, Making and owning an H-bomb is the kind of challenge real Americans seek. Who wants to be a passive victim of nuclear war when, with a little effort, you can be an active participant. Apparently… Read more →
The war on Christmas
Happy Jihab’s House of Pancakes has announced The War on Christmas. Every year, conservatives state that America has declared war on Christmas because of the all the secular and commercial aspects of the Christmas holiday season. It angers rabid right-wing Christian nut-bags that Christmas (and Easter and…) isn’t solely about “Christian” values, or something, and so they make a lot… Read more →
Media and RNC hypocrisy
We all know media and politics engender mass hypocrisy. We probably expect it and therefore put up with more than we should. Once again, it’s the razor sharp mind of humorists that are good for exposing this. John Stewart is one of the best in this area, and he’s come up with a piece of reporting that needs to be… Read more →
I’m sorry, I thought you said artistic
The US army is again in trouble over overaggressive recruiters. An 18-year old autistic kid has been recruited for one of the most dangerous of assignments – a cavalry scout in Iraq. An obviously vulnerable person is targetted to fill quotas. …Jared doesn’t understand the dangers or the details of what he’s done, the Guinthers said. When they asked Jared… Read more →
